Museo ni Apolinario Mabini at ang Pagdiriwang ng Kanyang ika-150ng Kaarawan

Brgy.

The motorcade started on-site in Brgy. Buli, Taal, Batangas and traversed all throughout Taal, and the neighboring towns of Lemery, Sta. Teresita, Bauan and Calaca. Joining the parade are the staff of Camella Taal, brokers, and even some clients.

They made their presence felt until lunch time, but the celebration wasn’t over yet as Sen. Manny Villar graced the Grand Launch Party at Casa Cecilia, Taal, Batangas, after visiting the site in Brgy. Buli.

It was a night of culture, tradition, food and fun, as the guests were all treated to a string quartet, performances of local artists, presentation of the model houses, and of course, the much-awaited speech from Sen. Villar.

Sen. Villar admits that “Camella Taal is a diamond project” and one of the best sites of the company so far. He expressed gratitude to the residents and government officials of Taal for preserving not only the old houses of our ancestors, but also the culture of hospitality of Batangueños and all Filipinos in general.

The brokers were also a highlight of his speech, when he said that Camella Taal brokers are capable of carrying other products of Vista Land (including Brittany, Crown Asia and more) in the whole Philippines, meaning they are given more opportunities to earn as they encounter clients with different needs and requirements.

From our point of view as guests, we noticed the commitment of Camella in providing Batanguenos with a good place to live in and raise their families. Moreover, we appreciate the fact that Camella adapts to the local culture in terms of design and landscape.

Isa syang working scholar sa University of the East na nag tapos sa kursong Fine Arts Major in Advertising at ngayo’y nag tatrabaho bilang Graphic Artist ng Garment Apparel in the Philippines.

We were once again invited to the opening of a Camella Project, this time to Solamente in Batangas City. The launch started with a mass in Brgy. Alangilan, then a motorcade to Brgy. Soro Soro (the site of Camella Solamente) and the rest of Batangas City.

Solamente means “one and only” in Spanish, and according to Camella this new community is designed to become a haven, a “paradise of greens with blossoms that remind one of lively Spanish Villages.” The project is the 8th subidivision of Camella in the province of Batangas. As with the opening of Camella Taal, Sen. Manny Villar graced the occassion and addressed sales agents and prospective buyers of the the new project.

Posted here are some photos of the event tonight.

Camella Solamente boasts of a community well designed for the family for their safety, recreation and living the “dream life.” Aside from a wide array of choices for their house, the subdivision has a Club House, a basketball court, swimming pool, and playground. It is also great to note that project has a very accessible location, just a few hundred meters from the Batangas exit of Star Tollway, and very close to the port of Batangas via the diversion road. This location actually suits parents who travel a lot, both using the port and the toll road.

And of course, Sen. Villar takes the stage and leads the toast to the new project.

BRGR ST: Dig in to the Batangas Burger Craze

Customers digging at night at BRGR STJust this year, burger joints have been popping up here in Batangas and every new store promises of serving delicious burgers that everyone has been craving for. This article is on BRGR ST., a burger joint that will satisfy your cravings and will make you drool in the process.

Owned by Chef Jomar Aldover, Burger Street (BRGR ST) started last July 04, 2014. It is called BRGR ST because the restaurant is setup on an actual street. It is a home-based burger joint located inside a subdivision in Batangas City. Chef Jom initiated a soft launch before opening, and could not believe that almost all his patties were sold out.

Interview with the Chef JomarFrom our interview with Chef Jomar :
“When we started, grilling day is only once a week (every Friday) because back then I was working as a head chef in Lipa City. But even then ideas kept coming. We started serving firebrick grilled burgers and after a few weeks of grilling our customers wanted more products, we served Angus beef hotdogs also known as Texas Chili Cheese Dogs. As the days go by, the demand is getting bigger so we updated our serving days to Thursdays and Saturdays. I also try to add something new and unique on my menu, like Sloppy Joe’s sandwich, Philly Cheese Steak, and sausages, and try to introduce some sauce variety on our burgers. The concept of BRGR ST menu is american style, but with affordable prices starting from P120 up to 300.”

Chef Jomar said that having his own restaurant is his dream. Now that he was able to start BRGR ST, he is now looking to serve his customers the best burgers in the city. He personally oversees the grinding of the beef to make sure that he gets the parts that he wants. And deriving from the success of KFC and other secret recipes, Chef Jom alone knows how to make the mouth-watering patties and sauces that his customers go back to.

We arrived at BRGR ST earlier than its published opening time so that we can do some pictorials and have our burgers without being a nuisance to the other customers. We were graciously served the Cheese Burger, Hickory Smoke Burger, Spicy Buffalo, the Tower Burger, Texas Chili Cheese Dog and Philly Cheese Steak. Each bite was sensational and we finished most of what was served, except the huge three-patty Tower Burger. BRGR ST has indeed lived up to its reputation and eating our burgers transported us to somewhere in the US where these kinds of burgers can be mostly found.

BRGR ST is open Thursdays and Saturdays from 6pm till the last patty. Chef Jomar only wanted to open his store on those days to be different from other stores, as well as create a demand during its open day. As a marketing tool, Chef Jomar takes pictures of his customers and posts them on FB. His customers now enjoy seeing the social media photos of their meal and their group shots at the store.

Try BRGR ST and you’ll find your self there again and again.

How Do Batangueños Love?

How Do Batangueños Love?Arnold-Myra-Brosoto-traditional-wedding

There are many stereotypes and generalizations that are linked to Batangueños. For some people Batangueños are arrogant, hot-headed and hard drinkers. But wherever in the world they could be, they are always proud of their roots.
Bugs Serrano, native Batangueño shares his trait.

“Batanguenos are very true to themselves. They are not ashamed to call themselves as Batangueños.”
But what about the soft spot of Batangueños?

To most people I interviewed, Batangueños love the idea of love. They are known for being romantic and sweet lovers. When it comes to love, they always have so much to say and stand for.

”We will sacrifice our own happiness just to make you happy.” quips Michael Ryan Catapang, 28 year- old Batngueño, “When it comes to love we can offer our life even space. We can love you without asking anything in return.”

A Batangueño man’s style of winning a woman’s heart is deeply rooted from the old tradition of courtship in the Philippines. We can even trace in the history of romanticism among Batangueños. A fine example is a man goes to the house of the girl and pleases her parents.

Steve Cardona, a film maker, says that Batangueños are serious lovers. Most of the films he produces are about the different faces of love. He himself is still up to the traditional way of courtship.

Back in the day, courting a Filipino woman does not mean going out on a date. A man has to visit her at home in the evening and talk to her in the living room with her parents watching nearby. In the process, when the man wins her heart, proposes to marry, the challenge to his sincerity unfolds.

In Batangas, the journey towards marriage starts with the “bulungan” wherein the groom gathers together his family and the bride’s family and formally asks for her hand. The groom will provide the food and drinks.
Next is the “paninilbihan” where the groom will provide assistance to the bride’s family in the form of errands and household chores.

Traditionally, the celebration is done at the bride’s place. Before the wedding day, the groom’s entourage starts to walk in at the bride’s place during noontime. All things needed for the celebration are brought to her place such as live cows, pigs and vegetables.

It is a long wedding celebration for them on the “bisperas” or the night before the wedding. The bride and groom will have their first dance and the visitors will pin paper money on their cloths for prosperity and luck.

Taal-Batangas-Traditional-WeddingThe church wedding ceremony that follows the next day is usually held at 8 to 9 AM. Traditionally, the bride wears a white bridal gown and the groom wears a barong tagalong.

After the wedding, they go straight to the bride’s place for celebration. But before they enter the house they are told to eat sticky rice product called “kalamay” and a glass of wine for long lasting marriage.
Subsequently, they are asked to look for the coins in the winnowing basket full of uncooked rice and flowers, for good fortune. The releasing of white doves is also done as a sign of harmonious marriage. Then the presentation of gifts of the guests follows. It is what they call “sabugan”.

After the celebration, the newlyweds prepare the “lipatan” or the transfer at the groom’s residence. Again, before they enter the groom’s house they will eat first the “kalamay”. Then the most exciting part follows.
Batangueño men have a very high regard towards women. Most of their traditional songs were written to praise and worship the beauty of women. Perhaps the most famous of all is the “Prinsesa ng Kumintang” which tells about the pursuit of a very beautiful woman.

It says that if a man wants to find happiness, he would simply has to choose a Batangueña for a wife. This is because she is always dainty and would be with you no matter how hard life becomes. The song goes on to say that her smiles would bring you hopes, she’s a beautiful pearl, who loves purely. She is likened to a bright star, even though her heart is breaking. However, the common warning is that you must be careful not to make a fool of her or you’ll end up with trouble.
In conclusion, Batangueños gives importance in their old custom and tradition in courtship and marriage. They have a serious belief when it comes to love and romance. They are pure lovers at the same time gladiatorial so never to mess up with their love.

The Art of Batangas Artists Then and Now

$

0

There are many sayings on how art was back in the day and how freely it expresses now.

“The way that art changes depends on the environment you grew up in or with the people that surround you. It’s either you adapt what environment gives to you or the people around you, sometimes it’s just all in you,” says Christian “Tano” Panaligan.

Whether people see art as something to be nurtured or something fleeting, not everybody understands how art is formed and created. Yet as contradicting as it sounds, art is universal, and at the same time, subject to interpretation.

Finding what art is in Batangas has extended from, not just by interpreting the qualities of the art, but made it flourish in many practices.

Back in the day, art is seen as conservative or restricted. “From my perspective, back in the 70s, everything was conservative – the people, the environment, the art. Artists feel held back from executing a certain work because most people might give negative impressions,” according to Bugs Serrano.

A famous deviant is Manolito Tolentino “Toto” Mayo. Born on December 17, 1954 in Lipa, Batangas. Toto was known for his contribution as a sculptor, graphic artist, and modern poet. He was also an art professor.

Toto was believed to be the first person to contribute and influence punk in the Philippines through his looks, hairstyle and art. Though before, punk was considered as too shocking and ugly for people to adapt, it somehow made artists feel different which resulted to a unique aesthetic. Art Punk was originally a connection of punk rock music and punk subculture. It is where people have the freedom to do whatever they want, whether it be in style and looks.

Temptation_(1976)One of his more popular artworks is “Temptation”. Made in 1976, people say that it portrays trust and betrayal to a friend or your partner. In the painting, two people stand there – one with his hands tied, while the other looks away; symbolizing that they are both committed yet they are holding back to the things they really want. While the lizard is the public person who watches and observes them. The “Temptation” in Lito Mayo’s painting portrays that a person could like anything they want but they are limited with their desire to grab hold of it.

Toto was a young active artist, who experimented, collaborated and showcased his artwork in successful centers of modernist and contemporary galleries and art associations in Ermita District of Manila. Though his career was only brief, he made his art meaningful and influenced many artists by the skills he had.

“Unlike today, people are more open minded than before. There’s more freedom to express what we want to make and people start to appreciate that.” says Bugs Serrano.
“The art before and now is just the same. I think the only thing that changed was the quality or the tools artists had,” said Michael Ryan Mulingtapang, a 28-year-old contemporary artist who collaborates in tattoo designs.

In today’s art, many artists find themselves to be more expressive because it gives them the freedom to show what they really want. But for some, it’s quite difficult to be known for something majority of the population like. Some will only credit their work but others will benefit for the name they have.

Foolwool 2014A struggling artist who found his path in the art world, 27-year-old Christian “Tano” Panaligan started drawing at a very young age. A self-taught artist, he always knew that his art will be recognized and appreciated by the likes of Batanganeuo’s and fellow Filipinos.

“Struggles were always there ever since I entered the art world, I didn’t know where to start since I didn’t learn art. I just sketched and painted until one or two people appreciated the work I’ve done. But even if there’s no one to appreciate the works I’ve done, I won’t stop,” he shares.

Tano didn’t bow down to the struggles he had but explored more of the art that he was best suited in. In fact, this resulted to Tano, along with other artists in Batangas, popularize an underground art movement that is best known as lowbrow or pop surrealism; an art movement with its cultural backgrounds in underground comics, punk music, and the cultures of the street.

Tano explored his art for over 4 years and he found the kind of art he was best recognizable and supported with. From the encouragement of an old friend, Gym Lumbera, “Don’t stop, just keep on doing what you do,” Tano never stopped pursuing his passion for art and also from the endless support of his best friend, Ralph Quijano. Knowing being a painter wasn’t easy, Tano supported his needs by being a prep school teacher from St. Philomena Academy, Antipolo Del Norte, Lipa City.

From drawing sketches to painting and to finally hosting his own shows like Paperview, Tano became a painter that not only caught the Batanganeuo’s attention but people from other parts of the country.

Art then and now is like being family that lives on from generation to generation. And being an artist, it takes many struggles to find where their art lies.

“Today’s art has no original form when all art has been recreated from the art before. They used it as a reference to create a new one, a new art that will be recycled and will be adapted by the next generation and that is a cycle of art,” according to Tano.

So, where does your art take you?

Thumbs up with Eli AndresTaal is known for its preserved cultural heritage and old ancestral houses that’s why it is given the title “Heritage Town”. Its municipality and people are hand-in-hand in taking care of these tourist spots as they are intent on preserving history and our traditions.

Alongside its locals and ancestral houses, Taal is also known for its authentic Batangueño food. And what field trip would not be complete if you will not sample the local delicacies.

Don Juan, the first boodle house that serves native Taal delicacies, is a big hit and the first tourist destination for food tripping.

Interview with Eli AndresIn an interview with Eli Andres, the manager of Don Juan:
“Don Juan is known for Taal’s Specialities; Tapang Taal, Longganisang Taal, Pork Barbeque, Fried Tawilis, Adobo sa Dilaw and Sinaing na Tulingan. All the foods that we serve are fresh and no preservatives. We came up with Don Juan for people to acknowledge the way of how filipino’s eat, with their finger licking and eating from banana leaf serves as the native way. All served in one boodle and eating as if you’re at home. Knowing Taal for being a heritage town, there are visitors coming all the way from Visayas, Lipa and Batangas.”

Their Boodle comes in three servings namely: Inihaw Boodle, Don Juan’s Boodle and Taal’s Specialties Boodle that are all good for 4 to 6 persons.

“We came up with Boodle because of the old ways on how soldiers used to eat, with bare hands and banana leaf. Eating together with more people is more fun specially sharing the best food we can serve,” added Eli Andres.

We were served with a boodle of Taal’s Specialties namely Tapang Taal, Longganisang Taal, Sinaing na tulingan, Inihaw na Baboy, Adobo sa Dilaw, Fried Tawilis, Ginataang Sitaw Kalabasa served with sliced tomatoes, onions, pickled papaya and steamed rice known as Taal’s Specialties Boodle. Serving us the boodle made us realise it is better to eat with our bare hands and chatting made it fun that helped us to be closer with one another. Laughs and bonding were worthwhile and also the food made it suitable for the fun we had.

“It made me feel the true Pinoy essence that is something we can be proud of and eating together in a meal is very mush important for Pinoys especially when the foods served adds falvor to bonding,” said Andrea Josa Suazo of WowBatangas.

We got to taste different portions of food which we had never encountered before like the Fried Tawilis that can be eaten whole and non-stop picking of the crisp of Tawilis. Another that was so undeniably delicious was Tapang Taal; it is a local dish that is marinated just like the Longanizang Taal, but it is thinly sliced and diced pork served as tapa.

Friend Suman with chocolate spread Halo halo Sago’t Gulaman Leche Flan Pampering up with their deserts; Leche Flan, Fried Suman with chocolate spread, Halo halo and Sago’t Gulaman, you’ll find yourself in the middle of the Green Field, breathing fresh air. We were much fascinated by the deserts that was served for us and was really enjoyable to eat. One serve of their desert wasn’t enough to fill our stomach but it was a joy to taste their delicacies.

“Eating at Don Juan is like eating at home and it makes you wonder the fresh breeze of the forest. That’s how Don Juan made me feel. The rich delicacies of Taal promises that wherever you are, you’re at home,” said Nicole John Martinez of WowBatangas.

The inside of Don Juan’s restaurant is patterned from the old houses of Taal. Don Juan is a restaurant that brings the family together in one meal and they encourage eating with bare hands, which is as Pinoy at it comes. Not only that, barkadas and group of friends and tourists will also enjoy dining here.
